Atiku Urges INEC to Review 2027 Election Dates Over Ramadan
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the dates announced for the 2027 general elections, saying the timetable clashes with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
INEC on Friday fixed the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls are scheduled for March 6, 2027, stating that the dates were chosen in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
However, the timetable has drawn criticism as Ramadan is projected to run from around February 8 to March 10, 2027, meaning both election dates fall within the fasting period.
In a statement on Friday, Atiku said the February 20 poll date falls “squarely within the Ramadan period,” describing the month as a time of fasting, reflection and spiritual devotion for millions of Nigerian Muslims.
He noted that elections require maximum participation, physical strength and collective focus, stressing that fixing such a major civic exercise during a significant religious observance shows poor judgment and a lack of sensitivity.
Atiku added that Nigeria’s plural nature makes inclusive decision-making necessary, insisting that election planning should accommodate broad public interests.
He further questioned INEC’s competence, asking that if the commission cannot properly handle election timing, Nigerians are justified in doubting its ability to deliver free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
