Ashley Young Retires from Professional Football at 40
Former Ashley Young has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on an impressive 23-year career.
The ex-Manchester United and England national football team defender confirmed the decision ahead of what could be his final appearance for Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Young began his career as a winger before successfully transitioning into a full-back role.
He started out at Watford and went on to feature for Aston Villa, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Everton, before ending his career at Ipswich, whom he joined in July 2025 on a one-year deal.
On the international stage, Young earned 39 caps for England after making his debut in 2007, scoring seven goals. He represented the Three Lions at major tournaments, including UEFA Euro 2012 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where England reached the semi-finals under Gareth Southgate.
Reflecting on his journey in a social media post, Young described his career as a dream fulfilled, tracing his path from grassroots football to some of Europe’s biggest stadiums. He hinted that his side’s upcoming fixture could mark his final game.
Young’s career peaked following his move to Manchester United in 2011, where he spent nine successful years. During his time at Old Trafford, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Europa League, and League Cup. He later joined Inter Milan in 2020, winning the Serie A title in his only season with the Italian side.
Speaking on his decision, Young admitted age and physical demands played a role but expressed satisfaction at leaving the game on his own terms. He added that his immediate focus remains helping Ipswich push for promotion back to the Premier League.
