Super Eagles to Receive AFCON Bonuses Today or Tomorrow – FG

The federal government has confirmed that the Super Eagles’ match bonuses for the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have cleared the necessary regulatory processes.

In a statement on Thursday, Doris Uzoka-Anite, Minister of State for Finance, said the payments would reflect in the players’ domiciliary accounts “starting today or tomorrow.”

Earlier this week, the Eagles threatened to boycott their travel to the host city of their quarter-final match due to unpaid allowances. Nigeria is set to face Algeria in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Marrakesh, a city approximately five hours from their current base in Fez.

According to sources, the team will refuse to travel unless the outstanding allowances are settled. The players are yet to receive bonuses for all four matches played in the tournament.

Uzoka-Anite explained that the delay was due to the conversion process required to move funds into foreign currency, which was the players’ preferred payment method. She assured that the process had now been fast-tracked and that final transfers to the players’ domiciliary accounts are “currently in flight.”

She added: “The Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have successfully streamlined the foreign exchange processing to ensure our players are rewarded without further delay. Going forward, the process will be fully streamlined to ensure faster, more predictable disbursements aligned with international best practice.”

This is not the first time Nigeria’s players have protested over allowances. In November 2024, the team boycotted training during the African World Cup playoffs over unpaid bonuses, contributing to Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification disappointment after a loss to DR Congo.

At the ongoing AFCON, the Super Eagles have won all four group-stage matches, scoring the highest number of goals (12) and finishing top of Group C. They also defeated Mozambique 4-0 in the second round.

The winner of Saturday’s Nigeria vs Algeria clash will advance to face either Morocco or Cameroon in the semi-finals.
