2027 : I’m not desperate to be president – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he is not desperate to become Nigeria’s president in the 2027 general election, stressing that his main concern is to see the country make meaningful progress.

Obi made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he explained that his ambition is driven by a desire to transform Nigeria rather than simply occupy the nation’s highest office.

Responding to a question on whether he would quit politics if he failed to win the presidency in 2027, Obi said his commitment has always been to Nigeria’s development, not personal ambition.

“I’ve always said that I am not desperate to become President of Nigeria. I am desperate to see Nigeria work. If it is working, I will support whatever makes it work,” he said.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate added that he would support anyone capable of moving the country forward.

According to him, he envisions a Nigeria where merit, rather than connections, determines success, poverty is significantly reduced, and young people have opportunities to thrive, secure jobs, and compete globally.

Obi stressed that Nigeria’s progress is more important to him than holding public office.

“It doesn’t matter if Peter Obi is the president or not. So far, Nigeria is good; I’m fine with it,” he said.

When asked whether he would be willing to serve in another capacity, such as a minister, Obi said he does not need to occupy any government position.

“I don’t even need to hold any office,” he said.

However, Obi maintained that he is seeking the presidency because he believes he has the capacity to address the country’s challenges.

“I’m contesting because I believe that I will fix it. I will unite the country and be able to show an example of what is possible,” he added.
