Eustaquio’s Stoppage-Time Goal Sends Canada Past South Africa Into World Cup Last 16

Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Canada edged South Africa 1-0 at the Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday to secure a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Round of 32 encounter looked destined for extra time after a tense, evenly balanced contest, but Eustaquio struck in the 92nd minute to break South African hearts and send the tournament co-hosts through.

Canada enjoyed the better chances in the opening half but were repeatedly frustrated by Bafana Bafana’s disciplined defence. Derek Cornelius squandered an early opportunity when his close-range header was comfortably saved by Ronwen Williams, while Aubrey Modiba produced a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Moise Bombito shortly before the interval.

South Africa, under coach Hugo Broos, remained organised throughout the match and threatened sporadically on the counterattack through Oswin Appollis, although goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau was rarely troubled.

The introduction of Alphonso Davies in the 75th minute injected fresh energy into Canada’s attack. Returning from a hamstring injury, the winger immediately stretched South Africa’s defence with his pace and direct running.

Canada eventually found the breakthrough deep into stoppage time after a partially cleared cross fell kindly to Eustaquio on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder controlled the ball with an excellent first touch before drilling a low shot beyond Williams into the bottom corner to seal the victory.

The win sends Canada into the Round of 16, where they will face the winners of the clash between the Netherlands and Morocco in Houston on July 4, while South Africa’s impressive World Cup campaign comes to a heartbreaking end.
