Watkins Fires Villa to Dramatic Win Over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Ollie Watkins came off the bench to inspire Aston Villa to a 2–1 comeback victory over Chelsea, extending the club’s remarkable Premier League winning run at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The England forward, who had scored just three league goals all season, struck twice in the second half after being introduced by manager Unai Emery, keeping Villa firmly in the title race.

The win makes it 11 consecutive league victories for third-placed Villa, who move back within three points of leaders Arsenal ahead of their clash on Tuesday.

Chelsea, meanwhile, continue to struggle after once being Arsenal’s closest challengers. The Blues have now managed just one win in their last six league matches and slip to fifth place.

Despite dominating the first half, Chelsea failed to build on their advantage. Cole Palmer dragged an early effort wide, while Enzo Fernández saw a curling shot narrowly miss the target. Their pressure eventually told in the 37th minute when Reece James’ inswinging corner deflected off João Pedro and found the net, with goalkeeper Emi Martínez unable to react in time.

However, Chelsea faded after the break as Villa grew into the contest. Emery’s triple substitution on the hour mark — introducing Watkins, Jadon Sancho and Amadou Onana — shifted the momentum.

Watkins soon equalised, breaking through the Chelsea defence before seeing his initial effort saved by Robert Sánchez, only for the rebound to deflect off him and in off the post.

Villa continued to press, with Sánchez denying Ian Maatsen, while Chelsea struggled to regain control. Head coach Enzo Maresca, banned from the touchline, attempted to halt Villa’s surge by substituting Palmer — a move that visibly frustrated the winger.

The visitors eventually sealed the win when Watkins rose above the Chelsea defence to power home a header from a Youri Tielemans corner, matching Villa’s best league winning streak since 1914.

The result also leaves Villa 10 points clear of Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification, further underlining their growing credentials this season.
