Tinubu Appoints 39-Year-Old Professor Segun Aina as New JAMB Registrar
President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina, a computer engineering expert at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Aina will take over from Professor Ishaq Oloyede, whose second term ends on July 31, 2026.
Oloyede was first appointed in August 2016 by former President Muhammadu Buhari and was reappointed for another five-year term in 2021.
At 39 years old, Aina is set to become the youngest registrar in JAMB’s history. He will turn 40 in July.
Announcing the appointment in a statement on Thursday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Aina as an accomplished academic and technology expert with deep experience in examination systems, digital infrastructure, and institutional reform.
According to the statement, Aina holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, United Kingdom, as well as a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University.
He also attended the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.
Onanuga noted that Aina’s relationship with JAMB began during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, where he gained early experience in admissions administration and data-driven institutional processes.
He added that Aina has spent more than 15 years working at the intersection of technology, policy, and public-sector transformation, advising both federal and state governments on digital transition and operational reforms.
The statement further highlighted his contributions to examination reforms through consultancy roles with bodies such as NECO, NABTEB, and several state ministries of education.
Aina is also affiliated with several professional organisations, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Aina would use his expertise and experience to strengthen the operations of JAMB and advance ongoing reforms within the examination body.
