Ilorin West/Asa: Atagisoro Promises to Use Legislative Salary for Elderly, Youth Empowerment

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency, Shuaib Muhammad Jamiu Atagisoro, has pledged to voluntarily dedicate his legislative salary to a constituency support initiative targeted at elderly and vulnerable women if elected to the House of Representatives.

Atagisoro made the pledge in a statement outlining his vision and priorities for the constituency, describing public office as a responsibility to serve rather than an avenue for personal financial gain.

According to him, the proposed initiative would be administered through a transparent and accountable framework, with beneficiaries identified using fair criteria and proper records maintained on the disbursement of funds.

He stressed that the initiative would not be a payment for votes or an attempt to influence voters, but rather a personal commitment to demonstrating what he described as “service, sacrifice and accountability” in public office.

Atagisoro said elderly women deserved particular attention because of their contributions to families and communities over the years.

“Our mothers and elderly women have spent much of their lives caring for families, preserving our values and traditions, raising children, supporting communities and contributing to society,” he said, adding that they deserved dignity, compassion and support in their later years.

Beyond the salary pledge, the NDC candidate identified youth empowerment, education, economic opportunities, constituency development and social welfare as key areas of his proposed legislative agenda.

On youth empowerment, Atagisoro said he would prioritise skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, innovation and opportunities aimed at helping young people become economically productive and self-reliant.

He also promised to advocate for improved educational opportunities, support for students and skills-development programmes, while promoting initiatives capable of strengthening small businesses and creating sustainable livelihoods.

On constituency development, he said his administration, if elected, would seek to attract federal programmes and development projects to communities across Ilorin West and Asa, while advocating for infrastructure and public services that could improve residents’ quality of life.

Atagisoro further pledged to give attention to vulnerable residents, including elderly people, women facing hardship and other members of the constituency in need of social support.

He acknowledged that his legislative salary alone could not address all the challenges confronting the constituency, describing the pledge instead as a personal demonstration of the type of leadership he intends to provide.

“I am not seeking public office for personal financial gain. I am seeking the opportunity to contribute, to represent our people with dignity, to advocate for our communities and to make a meaningful difference,” he said.

Atagisoro urged residents of Ilorin West/Asa to support his candidacy, promising to regard their mandate as a responsibility that must be honoured through service and accountability.

He is contesting for the Federal House of Representatives seat for Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
