Democracy Day: Tinubu to Address Joint Session of National Assembly
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) responsible for coordinating the nationwide commemoration.
Speaking at the event in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, said the presidential address would be one of the major highlights of the Democracy Day programme.
Akume described Democracy Day as a time to reflect on the sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for the return of democratic governance. He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, including the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo (MKO) Abiola.
According to the SGF, the anniversary also provides an opportunity for the federal government to highlight efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
He urged members of the committee to commence work immediately, noting that only a few days remain before the celebration.
Akume added that this year’s Democracy Day activities would reflect the mood of the nation while demonstrating the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
Other events lined up for the celebration include a world press conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, and an interdenominational church service on June 7.
A Democracy Day public lecture is scheduled for June 9, while programmes targeting youths and women will hold on June 10.
President Tinubu is also expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast on June 12. The activities will conclude with a Democracy Day gala night on the same day.
