Akpabio Promises Support for Senators Affected by Primary Election Setbacks
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured lawmakers affected by recent party primary election losses that efforts are being made to address their concerns and reduce the political impact of the outcomes.
Speaking on Tuesday as senators resumed plenary after a three-week recess and the Eid-el-Kabir holiday, Akpabio acknowledged the mixed fortunes that accompanied the recently concluded party primaries across the country.
He congratulated political parties that successfully conducted their primaries and candidates who emerged victorious, noting that elections naturally produce both winners and losers.
According to him, the leadership of the Senate is working to ensure that serving senators experience minimal disappointments following the primary contests.
His remarks come amid growing concerns among lawmakers who either lost their party tickets or are involved in disputes arising from the nomination process.
Reports indicate that at least 14 serving senators were defeated during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in various states. Some lawmakers have also begun leaving the ruling party after failing to secure nominations.
Among them are Senator Shehu Buba of Bauchi South and Senator Garba Maidoki of Kebbi South.
While addressing the situation, Akpabio maintained that such developments are part of the democratic process, stressing that democracy remains the ultimate winner regardless of individual outcomes.
The Senate President also cautioned lawmakers against defecting to other political parties, making the remark in a light-hearted manner.
Shifting focus to national security, Akpabio expressed concern over the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, describing the incident as an attack on the nation’s collective conscience.
He urged political actors to avoid exploiting tragedies for political gain and instead support efforts aimed at improving security across the country.
Akpabio called on lawmakers to back all lawful measures designed to protect schools, secure communities, and ensure that criminal elements are brought to justice.
