Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing persistent internal disputes and unresolved leadership crises within the party.

In a resignation letter addressed to the chairman of the Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, Yusuf said deepening internal conflicts, prolonged leadership disagreements, and multiple legal battles had made it difficult for the party to function cohesively at both state and national levels.

The governor’s spokesperson and Director General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Tofa, confirmed that the resignation takes effect from Friday, January 23, 2026.

Yusuf expressed appreciation to the NNPP for providing him with a political platform since 2022 but noted that continued internal wrangling had led to growing disenfranchisement among party members and created divisions he described as increasingly irreconcilable.

“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Friday, 23 January 2026,” the governor stated.

“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination.”

According to Yusuf, the internal disputes have generated uncertainty within the party structure and undermined unity across its ranks nationwide.

He described his decision as one taken after careful reflection and in good faith, stressing that it was guided solely by the best interests of the people of Kano State.

“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he said.

“This decision is taken without bitterness or ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State.”

The statement added that Yusuf’s exit from the NNPP is accompanied by 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.

The development comes days after the governor held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House on January 19.
