The Dangote Refinery supplied about 92 percent of Nigeria’s daily petrol in February 2026 after the Federal Government paused fuel imports.

Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority showed that local refineries produced 36.5 million litres of petrol per day in February, while imports contributed only three million litres, bringing total daily supply to 39.5 million litres.

Sources within the regulator confirmed that no licences for petrol importation have been issued in 2026 because domestic production is currently meeting national demand.

The refinery owned by Aliko Dangote is presently the only facility producing petrol in the country, while other modular refineries mainly produce diesel.

However, despite the refinery reducing its gantry price by ₦100 to ₦1,075 per litre, filling stations across Lagos, Ogun, and the Federal Capital Territory continued to sell petrol between ₦1,200 and ₦1,330 per litre.

Meanwhile, industry operators have warned that the pause in fuel imports could create a monopoly in the downstream sector, though the refinery maintains that increased local refining will strengthen Nigeria’s energy security and reduce reliance on imports.
