Aregbesola Faults INEC Over Absence at ADC Convention
Rauf Aregbesola, National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to attend and monitor the party’s national convention held in Abuja.
Aregbesola stated that the ADC fulfilled all legal requirements stipulated under the Electoral Act, including timely notification, submission of membership registers, and provision of committee lists ahead of the convention. He stressed that failure to notify INEC is the only legal ground for invalidating a convention, a condition he said the party did not breach.
The ADC scribe described INEC’s absence as a dereliction of its constitutional responsibility and alleged that the commission’s action reflects a partisan posture aimed at delegitimising the party’s activities.
He also dismissed INEC’s reliance on a court of appeal judgment on the party’s leadership dispute, arguing that the ruling did not restrain the commission from monitoring the convention.
Aregbesola further accused INEC of treating the ADC like a proscribed party despite its legal status, warning that such actions could undermine democratic principles. He insisted the party remains duly registered and fully entitled to carry out its constitutional functions.
