The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has disclosed that it collaborated with the Accord Party during the August 15 Osun State governorship election to prevent the All Progressives Congress (APC) from winning the poll.

The ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this known during an interview with Trust TV on Monday while discussing the party’s performance in the election.

The ADC candidate, Najeem Salaam, secured 17,180 votes, while Accord’s Ademola Adeleke won the election with 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.

Abdullahi said the ADC had anticipated that a division of opposition votes could give the APC an advantage, prompting the party to cooperate with Accord.

According to him, the party’s inability to win the governorship seat did not amount to failure because its primary objective was to prevent the APC from returning to power in the state.

He said, “For us, victory means that APC was defeated. So we don’t see the fact that our governorship candidate did not emerge as an occasion of defeat or failure.”

When asked whether the ADC directed its supporters to vote for Adeleke, Abdullahi confirmed that the party “cooperated with the Accord party,” adding that the decision had the backing of the ADC leadership.

ADC Says Opposition Unity Can Defeat APC in 2027

Abdullahi described the outcome of the Osun election as evidence that opposition parties can defeat the ruling APC when they work together.

He said the experience could serve as a model for the 2027 presidential election, arguing that a united opposition could challenge the APC effectively.

However, Abdullahi said the ADC was not claiming sole credit for Adeleke’s victory, stressing that the people of Osun State deserved the credit.

He added that the victory ultimately belonged to Adeleke, who emerged victorious despite the challenges surrounding the election.
