Mexico Defeat South Africa 2-0 To Open 2026 FIFA World Cup
Host nation Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup in impressive fashion with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in the tournament’s opening match at the Mexico City Stadium on Thursday.
Backed by a passionate crowd of 80,824 spectators, El Tri delivered a disciplined and dominant performance to secure all three points in the Group A encounter.
Mexico took the lead as early as the ninth minute through Julián Quiñones, who capitalised on a defensive error before firing past South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to score the first goal of the tournament.
The hosts continued to dictate proceedings throughout the first half, creating several scoring opportunities while keeping South Africa under sustained pressure. However, Bafana Bafana nearly equalised before the break, only for goalkeeper Raúl Rangel to produce a crucial save.
South Africa’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a major setback shortly after halftime when Yaya Sithole was shown a straight red card in the 49th minute for a dangerous challenge.
With a numerical advantage, Mexico doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, and veteran striker Raúl Jiménez rose highest to power a header into the net, effectively putting the contest beyond South Africa.
The match ended on a tense note as disciplinary issues took centre stage. South Africa were reduced to nine men in the 84th minute after Themba Zwane received a red card following a VAR review. Mexico also finished with 10 players after defender César Montes was sent off in stoppage time for a reckless challenge.
Despite the late drama, Javier Aguirre’s men comfortably saw out the remainder of the game to record a convincing victory and make a strong statement at the start of the tournament.
The result gives Mexico an ideal start to their World Cup campaign, while South Africa will look to bounce back in their next group-stage fixture after suffering an opening-day defeat.
