DR Congo Hold Portugal to Historic World Cup Draw
The Democratic Republic of Congo made history on Wednesday by securing their first-ever FIFA World Cup point after holding Portugal to a 1-1 draw in their Group K opener.
Portugal took an early lead through João Neves, who headed home Pedro Neto’s cross in the sixth minute. However, the Congolese side responded strongly and found a deserved equaliser deep into first-half stoppage time when Yoane Wissa rose highest to nod past goalkeeper Diogo Costa, scoring DR Congo’s first-ever World Cup goal.
Making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, when the country competed as Zaire, the Central African nation delivered an impressive performance against the European giants. Their achievement was particularly remarkable considering the disruptions caused by the recent Ebola outbreak back home.
Cristiano Ronaldo, featuring in a record-equalling sixth World Cup at the age of 41, struggled to influence the contest. The Portuguese captain endured a frustrating evening, missing two clear opportunities created by Francisco Conceição in the second half.
Portugal thought they had restored their lead through João Cancelo’s spectacular overhead kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside. DR Congo also came close to snatching victory when veteran striker Cédric Bakambu struck the post after muscling past Bruno Fernandes.
Despite enjoying more possession, Portugal lacked their usual attacking sharpness and were unable to find a winning goal. The result leaves Roberto Martínez’s side with work to do in their remaining group matches, while DR Congo celebrate a landmark moment in their football history.
