Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid on Three-Year Deal
Spanish giants Real Madrid have announced the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new head coach on a three-year contract, marking the Portuguese tactician’s return to the Santiago Bernabéu 13 years after his first spell at the club.
The 63-year-old will officially take charge on July 13 when the club begins preparations for the new season. He replaces Alvaro Arbeloa following a disappointing campaign in which Madrid ended the season without a major trophy for the second consecutive year.
In a statement released on Thursday, Real Madrid confirmed that Mourinho will remain in charge until June 30, 2029.
Mourinho joins from Benfica, where he guided the Lisbon-based side through an unbeaten league season. Reports indicate that Real Madrid paid €15 million to secure his services.
The Portuguese manager previously coached Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup. During his first stint, he oversaw a record-breaking 2011/12 campaign in which Madrid became the first club to reach 100 points in a single La Liga season.
Known for his strong personality and demanding leadership style, Mourinho has been tasked with restoring Madrid to the summit of European football and addressing dressing-room issues that reportedly affected the team last season.
His return also represents a comeback to elite European football after spells with clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma and Fenerbahce.
Widely regarded as one of football’s most successful managers, Mourinho won the UEFA Champions League with FC Porto in 2004 and later repeated the feat with Inter Milan in 2010. He also enjoyed title-winning spells in England with Chelsea and lifted the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez recently praised Mourinho’s contribution to the club’s modern success, describing him as one of the figures who helped lay the foundation for Madrid’s dominance in European competitions over the past decade.
With expectations high and pressure mounting, Mourinho now faces the challenge of returning Real Madrid to winning ways and ending the club’s recent trophy drought.
