President Bola Tinubu has said that democracy can only survive through strong institutions, grassroots participation, and active political engagement by citizens.

Speaking on Saturday after taking part in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary in Ikoyi, Lagos, Tinubu described the exercise as proof of the party’s commitment to internal democracy and grassroots politics.

The president voted alongside First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and later shared his thoughts in a statement posted on his X account.

According to Tinubu, democracy thrives when citizens actively participate in governance and political institutions remain strong and enduring.

“Democracy is not sustained by noise, speculation, or borrowed platforms,” he said.

“It is sustained by citizens who show up, party members who believe, institutions that endure, the grassroots, and a political family rooted in the people.”

Tinubu added that the APC has remained organised and focused because of its commitment to internal democracy and hard work across the country.

He said while other political groups may be driven by grievances, the APC remains committed to structure, service, and nation-building.

“Others may gather around grievances. We gather around structure, service, and the work of nation-building,” the president stated.

Tinubu also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening democracy and delivering progress for Nigerians under its “Renewed Hope” agenda.

The president is widely expected to emerge as the APC’s sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election after receiving the endorsement of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) in May 2025.

At an APC summit in Abuja, the chairman of the forum and governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, said APC governors were united in supporting Tinubu’s bid for a second term.

According to Uzodimma, the governors believe Tinubu should continue in office to help move Nigeria toward greater prosperity and development.
