Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva has completed a move to Real Madrid on a two-year contract, the Spanish giants confirmed on Wednesday.

Silva left Manchester City at the end of last season after his contract expired, bringing an end to a successful nine-year spell at the Premier League club.

“Real Madrid C.F. and Bernardo Silva have reached an agreement for the player to join the club for the next two seasons, until June 30, 2028,” the club said in a statement.

The 31-year-old Portugal international, who has earned 109 caps, is currently representing his country at the 2026 World Cup. He is expected to feature in Portugal’s opening Group K match against DR Congo in Houston later on Wednesday.

During his time at Manchester City, Silva made 459 appearances and scored 76 goals after joining from Monaco in 2017. He won 20 major trophies, including four consecutive Premier League titles from 2021 to 2024, as well as the 2023 treble-winning campaign.

Silva was also part of City’s domestic treble-winning side in 2019.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, are undergoing a transition after a trophyless spell. The club finished second in La Liga last season, eight points behind champions Barcelona, and were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Following two seasons without a major trophy, Florentino Pérez has reappointed José Mourinho as head coach.

The club has also been active in the transfer market, recently signing Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea for €55 million, while Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté is expected to join at the end of his contract. Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries has also been linked with a move, while Antonio Rüdiger has extended his contract until 2027.
