Adelabu to Resign as Power Minister, Eyes Oyo Governorship in 2027
Adebayo Adelabu, Nigeria’s minister of power, is set to resign his position in the coming days as he prepares to contest the Oyo State governorship election ahead of 2027.
According to his media aide, Adelabu has already informed Bola Ahmed Tinubu of his intention during a recent meeting, where the president reportedly gave his approval and support for the move.
The statement noted that the minister is expected to conclude key reforms in the power sector before stepping down, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation amid gas supply challenges, pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to suppliers.
During the meeting, Adelabu also presented his achievements in office, alongside policy frameworks such as the National Integrated Electricity Policy and other long-term plans aimed at sustaining improvements in the sector.
President Tinubu commended his performance, particularly his role in laying a solid foundation for power sector reforms, and endorsed his governorship ambition.
Adelabu, who was appointed minister in August 2023, previously served as a deputy governor at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
