President Bola Tinubu will attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States, this September, where he is expected to address world leaders on the progress of his administration’s reforms.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed this on Wednesday after meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to Ibrahim, Tinubu’s speech will focus on the successes of the administration’s economic reforms and Nigeria’s development agenda. The address is scheduled for about 10:45 a.m. New York time (3:45 p.m. Nigerian time), allowing Nigerians to watch it live.

The ambassador also revealed that the President would be seated in the front row of the General Assembly hall, just a few seats away from United States President Donald Trump. While he did not confirm a bilateral meeting between the two leaders, he noted that their proximity could create an opportunity for an interaction during the summit.

Tinubu is also expected to participate in several high-level side events on power and energy, education, and healthcare, although officials said efforts would be made to keep his itinerary manageable.

On regional security, Ibrahim said the President reaffirmed his commitment to improving border security across West Africa. He noted that Tinubu intends to work with the United Nations on a regional border policing framework to tackle insecurity linked to the region’s porous borders.

The ambassador further disclosed that he would present the proposed 2027 United Nations budget in his capacity as Chairman of the UN Budget Committee.

Tinubu’s participation at this year’s General Assembly marks his return to the annual summit after a two-year absence. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the 2024 and 2025 sessions while the President focused on domestic priorities.

At the previous General Assembly, Shettima delivered Nigeria’s national statement on Tinubu’s behalf, calling for greater commitment from the international community and highlighting the country’s ongoing economic reforms.
