PSG Seal Fifth Consecutive Ligue 1 Title After Win Over Lens
Paris Saint-Germain have secured their fifth straight Ligue 1 championship after a 2-0 away victory over RC Lens on Wednesday, a result that confirms their continued dominance in French football.
The win was powered by a goal from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who netted his 19th league goal of the season just before the half-hour mark, before substitute Ibrahim Mbaye added a late second to seal all three points at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
The result gives Paris Saint-Germain an unassailable nine-point lead at the top of the table with just one game remaining, officially wrapping up their 14th French league title overall — 12 of which have come in the last 14 years under Qatari ownership.
Luis Enrique’s side had effectively put one hand on the trophy the previous weekend with a narrow 1-0 win over Brest, which left Lens needing an unlikely turnaround in the final stretch of the season.
Despite making several changes to their starting lineup, PSG still controlled the encounter. Ousmane Dembélé played a key role in the opener, intercepting a defensive error before setting up Kvaratskhelia for the finish. The Georgian forward has been one of PSG’s standout performers this season.
RC Lens had their moments, with Abdallah Sima striking the post in the second half and Florian Thauvin seeing a late effort ruled out for offside, but they were ultimately unable to break PSG’s resistance.
Mbaye’s stoppage-time goal confirmed the scoreline and underlined PSG’s depth, even with several key players rested, including Achraf Hakimi, Nuno Mendes, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz, and Warren Zaïre-Emery.
The victory adds another trophy to PSG’s collection this season, having already won the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Intercontinental Cup, and the French Champions Trophy.
Attention now turns to their European campaign, where PSG — the defending champions — will face Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final in Budapest on May 30, with the chance to become one of the few clubs in the modern era to win back-to-back European titles.
Lens, meanwhile, are guaranteed a second-place finish, securing Champions League qualification for next season, and will also contest the French Cup final against Nice later this month.
