Tinubu to Disu: Restore Peace, You Have My Full Support
President Bola Tinubu has charged the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to restore peace and strengthen security across the country, assuring him of full presidential backing.
The directive was given on Wednesday at the State House during the decoration ceremony of Disu as Acting IGP, following the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun. His appointment is subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate, with the council expected to meet next week.
Describing the appointment as timely, Tinubu said Disu’s record of service, particularly during his time in Lagos when Tinubu served as governor, influenced the decision.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos,” the President said.
He urged the new police chief to rebuild public confidence in the Force, lead with professionalism and fairness, and prioritise the protection of lives and property.
“It’s a daunting challenge, but I know you can do it. You have my word and my full support,” Tinubu added.
The President noted that Nigeria continues to grapple with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities, stressing that Disu must bring innovation and strategic thinking to tackle the challenges. He also encouraged him to advance the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Tinubu paid tribute to the outgoing IGP, Egbetokun, thanking him for his service and urging him to remain available to support his successor.
“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” the President said.
Among those present at the ceremony were National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and retired AIG Hakeem Odumosu, alongside other senior officials and members of Disu’s family.
Speaking with State House correspondents after the ceremony, Disu said his appointment came as a surprise but expressed deep gratitude to the President.
“It came at a time I was not expecting it. That makes me thankful to the President for finding me worthy to serve as Inspector-General of Police,” he said.
The Acting IGP pledged to prioritise officers’ welfare, enforce discipline and adopt a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and impunity within the Force.
“The era of impunity is over. We must uphold human rights and professionalism. There will be zero tolerance for corruption,” he declared.
He emphasised that public cooperation would be critical to the success of policing efforts.
“No police anywhere in the world can succeed without the cooperation of the public. The citizens are the boss,” Disu said.
While acknowledging the efforts of officers battling insecurity, he promised to boost morale and sharpen strategies to confront banditry and insurgency.
“The country is facing serious security challenges. Our officers are hardworking. My duty is to channel their energy and morale towards achieving lasting peace and order,” he added.
