The Deputy Senate Leader and senator representing Kwara South, Lola Ashiru, has declared his intention to contest the Kwara governorship election in 2027.

Ashiru made this known while receiving executive members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State, at his country home in Offa.

He said he is entering the race because he believes he has the best credentials to lead the state and understands Kwara better than most contenders, having lived and worked in the state for many years.

On the agitation for Kwara North to produce the next governor, Ashiru said he sympathises with the district but insisted that leadership should be based on merit, stressing that power is not handed over on a platter but must be contested for.

The lawmaker also reacted to the recent bandit attack in Kaiama Local Government Area, calling on governments at all levels to strengthen border security by investing in the welfare and development of border communities.

According to him, proper management of border settlements would reduce criminal activities, describing such areas as the first line of defence against external threats.

He urged states sharing boundaries—such as Kwara, Niger and Kogi—to adopt a coordinated approach to improve prosperity in border communities, saying this would help curb killings and insecurity.

Ashiru commended the people of affected communities for their resilience, prayed for those killed, and called for a stronger developmental strategy to promote peace across Nigeria.
