PSG Beat Aston Villa to Retain UEFA Super Cup, Win 10th Trophy in Two Years

Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Super Cup title on Wednesday night, defeating Aston Villa 2-1 at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.

Desire Doue played a decisive role for the UEFA Champions League winners, providing the assist for the opening goal before scoring the winner in the second half.

PSG took the lead in the 22nd minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia received a pass from Doue, shifted the ball onto his right foot and fired a powerful shot into the top corner from outside the box.

Aston Villa responded just before halftime through teenager Brian Madjo, who scored on his competitive debut for the club by converting John McGinn’s cross in the 45th minute to level the score at 1-1.

The French champions regained control after the break and found the decisive goal in the 61st minute. Doue timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap before curling a composed finish into the far corner.

With the victory, PSG became only the fourth club in the modern era to retain the UEFA Super Cup, joining Real Madrid, AC Milan and Liverpool.

The match was also notable for being officiated by Somali referee Omar Artan, the first non-European official to take charge of the Super Cup.

PSG’s triumph continues an extraordinary period of success underlining their dominance in European and domestic football. Since the start of the 2024/25 season, the Paris club has now won 10 major trophies: two UEFA Champions League titles, two Ligue 1 titles, two UEFA Super Cups, two French Super Cups, one French Cup and one FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
