JUST IN : Cristiano Ronaldo Retires from International Football After 23 Years
Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his 23-year career with the national team.
The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on Thursday in an emotional message posted on his Instagram account, describing his time representing Portugal as a life-changing experience.
Ronaldo, who made his senior international debut in August 2003, said the time had come to hand over Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt to the next generation.
“The day has come for me to hand back the number 7 shirt of our national team,” he stated.
Reflecting on his journey, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said his decision was difficult, noting that his international career was defined by more than goals, records and trophies.
He expressed gratitude to the Portuguese people, teammates and supporters who stood by him throughout his time with the national team.
“Throughout my entire career with the national team, I always pushed myself beyond my limits. I wanted to win, I wanted to be better, I wanted to make history. I always demanded the most of myself,” he said.
Ronaldo also acknowledged the difficult moments and disappointments he experienced, insisting that he never lost his pride in representing his country.
He retires as the highest-scoring player in men’s international football, with 146 goals in 234 appearances, according to UEFA figures updated in October 2026. He also holds the record as the most-capped male international footballer.
During his illustrious international career, Ronaldo represented Portugal at several major tournaments, including the 2004 European Championship, where the country finished as runners-up.
He later captained Portugal to its first major international trophy at Euro 2016, despite being forced off injured during the final against France.
Portugal subsequently won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025, adding to the country’s international honours during his era.
Beyond international football, Ronaldo has enjoyed an extraordinary club career, winning five UEFA Champions League titles and league championships in England, Spain and Italy.
He played for top European clubs, including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, and remains Real Madrid’s all-time leading goalscorer following his nine-year spell at the Spanish club.
