INEC Reaffirms Neutrality Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to neutrality, fairness and transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Commission stated this on Sunday through its official X handle following a visit by its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, to the Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR.

The visit formed part of activities ahead of an interactive meeting with INEC staff and a zonal-level readiness assessment for the 2027 elections.

Amupitan was accompanied by National Commissioners, the Acting Director-General of the Electoral Institute, his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Technical Assistant, Chief of Staff, special aides and other senior officials of the Commission.

Speaking at the palace of the 19th Emir of Zazzau, the INEC chairman described the engagement as an important stakeholder meeting ahead of the 2027 electoral process.

He said traditional institutions remained key stakeholders because of their influence and grassroots reach, adding that their role was important to the success of credible elections.

According to Amupitan, elections are fundamentally about the social contract between citizens and those entrusted with public office, making public confidence essential to the democratic process.

He said INEC had commenced preparations early in view of the size and complexity of conducting elections across Nigeria.

The chairman noted that the Commission had moved away from last-minute preparations and was already testing, auditing and strengthening its operational systems ahead of the 2027 polls.

Amupitan assured the Emir that INEC would remain committed to neutrality, fairness and transparency throughout the electoral process.

“We have no candidates, we have no political party, we have no interest other than the sovereign will of the people of Nigeria,” he said.
