Xabi Alonso Named Chelsea Manager On Four-Year Contract

Chelsea FC have appointed Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager on a four-year deal, with the Spaniard set to take charge from July 1, 2026.

The appointment comes after Chelsea’s disappointing campaign, which saw the club lose the FA Cup final to Manchester City on Saturday and sit ninth in the Premier League with just two matches remaining this season.

Alonso earned widespread praise during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, where he guided the German side to an unbeaten Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double during the 2023/24 campaign, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most highly rated young coaches.

However, his spell at Real Madrid CF was short-lived, lasting only seven months before his departure in January.

In a statement released on Sunday, Chelsea confirmed the appointment, saying the club was “delighted” to welcome Alonso as manager of the men’s team.

The 44-year-old faces a major rebuilding task at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea continue to struggle for consistency despite spending over £1 billion on players since the club’s takeover by BlueCo in 2022.

Although the Blues lifted the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League last year, they have now gone eight consecutive seasons without winning a domestic trophy following their FA Cup final defeat at Wembley.

Chelsea supporters have also continued to express frustration with the club’s ownership and recruitment strategy, despite the emergence of standout players like Cole Palmer.

Alonso becomes Chelsea’s sixth permanent manager in four years, following the departures of Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.

His arrival is seen as a major statement by Chelsea’s owners, with many fans of Liverpool FC previously hoping Alonso would return to Anfield to replace under-pressure manager Arne Slot.
