Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has once again declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting that he will run as a principal candidate.

Obi made the declaration while campaigning for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate ahead of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) elections in the Federal Capital Territory.

Addressing supporters, Obi said backing the ADC in the AMAC poll was vital to his broader political ambition.

“Support us in AMAC; it will help our journey. Your support is critical. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I return, you will see,” he said.

Since his alignment with the ADC, Obi’s supporters, including members of the Obidient Movement, have intensified calls for the party to adopt him as its presidential flagbearer.

However, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi has urged party members to avoid divisive rhetoric, stressing the need for unity within the party.

Meanwhile, political speculations have emerged over a possible Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket on the ADC platform. Kwankwaso’s refusal to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has further fuelled talks of a potential alliance.

Supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have also renewed appeals for Obi to consider a vice-presidential role, similar to arrangements ahead of the 2019 election. Obi, however, dismissed such suggestions, reaffirming his resolve to contest the 2027 election as the party’s standard bearer.

Obi also reiterated his pledge to serve only one four-year term if elected president.
