Liverpool Rally Past Newcastle 3–1 at Anfield
Liverpool produced a spirited comeback to defeat Newcastle United 3–1 in their English Premier League clash at Anfield on Saturday night, ending a five-game winless run in the league.
The visitors took a surprise lead when Anthony Gordon finished off a swift counter-attack, slotting the ball into the far corner to put Eddie Howe’s side ahead against the run of play.
Despite dominating possession and creating early chances, Liverpool were forced to respond from behind. Their pressure paid off late in the first half, with Hugo Ekitike emerging as the hero. The French forward equalised in the 41st minute, stabbing home Florian Wirtz’s pass at the near post before adding a second just two minutes later with a precise finish into the far corner to hand Liverpool a 2–1 lead at halftime.
Ekitike’s brace extended Liverpool’s unbeaten league run against Newcastle to 19 matches and marked another frustrating outing for the Magpies at Anfield.
Liverpool continued to control proceedings after the restart, and Wirtz sealed the victory in the 67th minute with a well-taken strike that went in off the post. Despite a series of substitutions by Newcastle, the visitors were unable to mount a comeback.
The victory marked Liverpool’s first Premier League win of 2026 and a timely return to form as they look to regain momentum in the title race.
