The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kwara State, Engr. Sulaiman Bolakale Kawu Agaka, has expressed deep sorrow over the building collapse in Ilorin that claimed several lives.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Popo Giwa Street, beside Gogoro Mosque, in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state.

In a condolence message issued by his media office, Kawu Agaka sympathised with residents of the Popo Giwa community and the families of victims affected by the incident.

The collapsed structure was a multi-storey residential building. Several people reportedly lost their lives, while others were rescued alive and taken for medical treatment. Members of the same family, including children, were among those affected.

Describing the incident as a “profound tragedy,” the PDP flagbearer said the loss had plunged the affected families, the Ilorin Emirate and the entire state into mourning.

He condoled with the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who died, while wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

Kawu Agaka also commended the emergency responders who participated in the rescue operation, including the Kwara State Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other agencies.

He called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the building collapse and urged relevant authorities to conduct proper assessments of buildings across the state to prevent similar tragedies.
