AAC Raises Alarm Over Alleged Attack On Sowore In Ekiti
The African Action Congress (AAC) has raised concerns over an alleged attack on its 2027 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and members of his campaign team in Ekiti State.
The party disclosed that Sowore’s whereabouts were unknown after the reported incident, which allegedly took place around 1pm on Friday.
In a statement issued by Abdulkareem Musa, spokesperson for the Sowore/Magashi Presidential Election Campaign, the campaign described the development as a serious security threat.
It called on security agencies to urgently investigate the incident, establish what happened and take necessary steps to protect the presidential candidate and his team.
The campaign specifically urged the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities to intervene without delay.
It also demanded an immediate security assessment, adequate protection for Sowore and a thorough investigation to identify those behind the alleged attack.
The campaign warned against the use of violence and intimidation in political activities, insisting that disagreements among political groups should not result in attacks on citizens exercising their democratic rights.
It further stated that any harm to Sowore or members of his campaign team would be unacceptable, calling for those responsible to be brought to justice.
In a separate message shared on Sowore’s official X account, the campaign alleged that armed thugs had kidnapped the AAC presidential candidate.
The post also stated that his current location was unknown, raising further concerns about his safety.
However, the reported attack and alleged abduction had not been independently confirmed as of the time this report was filed.
Details surrounding the incident, including the identities of the alleged attackers and Sowore’s whereabouts, remained unclear.
The campaign did not provide further information on how the incident happened.
Sowore, who is seeking the presidency in the 2027 general election under the AAC, had travelled to Ekiti State for campaign activities on Thursday.
His absence from proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday was earlier explained by his lawyer, who informed the court that his client was away on campaign engagements in Ekiti.
Following his absence, the court adjourned his cyberbullying trial until November.
