NUC Approves Aviation Management, Aerospace Engineering Programmes for Baze University
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the introduction of two new undergraduate degree programmes, Aviation Management and Aerospace Engineering, at Baze University, Abuja, beginning from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approval comes as the university intensifies efforts to expand its presence in aviation and aerospace education, with the development of a dedicated Aviation School on an expansive site spanning over 88 hectares in Bwari, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), already at an advanced stage.
The Commission conveyed the approval in a letter dated October 16, 2026, signed by its Acting Director of Academic Planning, Dr Ayuba Mohammed, authorising the university to offer both programmes on a full-time basis at its main campus in Abuja.
According to the NUC, the decision followed a resource verification exercise conducted by a panel of experts to assess the availability of qualified personnel, infrastructure and other facilities required for the proposed programmes.
The exercise also included an inspection of the university’s Aviation School project in Bwari.
Following the panel’s assessment and recommendations, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, approved the establishment of the two programmes.
Under the new academic arrangement, Aviation Management will be offered in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, while Aerospace Engineering will be domiciled in the Faculty of Engineering.
The introduction of the programmes is expected to strengthen Baze University’s academic offerings in specialised disciplines critical to aviation operations, engineering, technological advancement and the development of Nigeria’s aerospace industry.
The approval also marks a significant step in the university’s broader investment in aviation education, particularly as construction and development activities continue at its proposed Aviation School in Bwari.
Situated on more than 88 hectares of land, the facility is designed to support the university’s long-term ambition of establishing a strong institutional presence in aviation education and specialised training.
The ongoing development of the Aviation School, alongside the introduction of the two undergraduate programmes, underscores the university’s commitment to providing the academic foundation and infrastructure required to develop skilled professionals for the aviation and aerospace sectors.
Although the newly approved programmes will commence at the university’s main campus in Abuja, the Aviation School project in Bwari forms part of a complementary long-term development initiative, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.
With the programmes scheduled to take off in the 2026/2027 academic session, Baze University is expected to further diversify its academic offerings while contributing to the development of specialised manpower in Nigeria’s aviation and aerospace industries.
The development represents another milestone in the university’s academic expansion and its efforts to align higher education with emerging technological advancements and industry demands.
