Excitement Builds in Ilorin as Four Teams Prepare for Adam Akanbi Memorial Unity Cup

Football fans in Ilorin are set for an exciting grassroots football fiesta as the Alhaji Adam Olohuntoyin Akanbi Memorial 2026 Unity Cup kicks off on Saturday, August 22, with four teams battling for honours in a competition built around unity, sportsmanship and excellence.

The tournament, held in honour of Alhaji Adam Olohuntoyin Akanbi, is being sponsored by AVM Oluwatoyin L.I. and powered by the Oke Ogun Youth Sport Committee.

According to the released fixtures, Ajanaku FC will face Awoli FC in the opening game on Saturday at 4pm at Wesley Field, along New Yidi Road, opposite Tuyil Pharmacy, Ilorin.

The competition will continue on Sunday, August 23, with Isalekoto FC taking on Edun FC, also at 4pm.

Action will resume on Monday as Isalekoto FC confronts Ajanaku FC, while Edun FC will battle Awoli FC on Tuesday, August 25.

The league-style fixtures will enter their penultimate stage on Wednesday, August 26, when Ajanaku FC faces Edun FC, before Awoli FC rounds off the group-stage matches against Isalekoto FC on Thursday, August 27.

The two best-performing teams at the end of the group stage will then qualify for the grand finale scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, 2026, where the first-placed team will face the second-placed side for the coveted Unity Cup.

Organisers said the tournament is more than a football competition, describing it as an avenue to bring young people together, promote healthy competition and strengthen community bonds through sports.

The event’s theme — “One Game, One Goal; One People, One Spirit; One Unity, One Future” — captures the broader vision behind the competition, with organisers hoping to use football as a platform for friendship, discipline and youth engagement.

With four teams, six group-stage fixtures and a final showdown ahead, attention will now shift to Wesley Field as players and supporters prepare for what promises to be a lively grassroots football spectacle in Ilorin.
