2027 Peter Obi, Kwankwaso officially defect to NDC
Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The two political heavyweights were received into the opposition party on Sunday at its national secretariat in Abuja.
Their defection follows earlier signals of political realignment, with Obi recently announcing his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Kwankwaso had hinted at ongoing consultations with the NDC leadership.
At the event, the NDC National Chairman, Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, presented membership cards to both leaders, formally welcoming them into the party.
Speaking after the ceremony, Kwankwaso said their decision to join the NDC was based on shared ideology and common vision for Nigeria. He urged Nigerians to register with the party ahead of its membership deadline.
Obi, on his part, called for unity within the party, warning members against internal disputes and litigation. He stressed that the NDC’s priority is to rebuild the country and improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
“We are not here for court cases. Our focus is to form a government that will rebuild Nigeria and ensure citizens can live without fear,” he said.
