Man City Clinch League Cup with O’Reilly Brace Against Arsenal
Manchester City defender Nico O’Reilly celebrated his 21st birthday in style on Sunday, scoring twice to secure a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the English League Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
O’Reilly, who turned 21 on Saturday, opened the scoring on the hour mark by capitalizing on a mistake from Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, heading the ball into the net from close range. Just four minutes later, he struck again with another precise header, sealing Manchester City’s ninth League Cup triumph.
“Unbelievable feeling. To win a final and beat such a strong team gives us real momentum,” O’Reilly said. “Seeing all the fans cheering when I scored was incredible. It’s been a fantastic birthday weekend. My family was in the stands, and I can’t wait to celebrate with them.”
Converted from a midfielder to a left-back by manager Pep Guardiola, O’Reilly credited his attacking instincts for his decisive performance. “Since I was a kid, I’ve always played in midfield, arriving in the box and scoring goals. Bringing that into senior football at this level feels amazing and adds another dimension to my game,” he added.
Manchester City’s victory marks another milestone for the club, with O’Reilly’s standout display confirming him as one of the league’s brightest young talents.
