Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, on Monday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja as part of ongoing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi, who is also a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), visited Jonathan alongside leaders from the South-East at the former president’s residence in the nation’s capital.

In a statement shared via his X account, Obi said the meeting formed part of his “extensive consultations” with key Nigerian leaders on the country’s future and the 2027 elections.

He noted that discussions during the visit were “frank and thoughtful,” focusing on the need to reposition Nigeria towards unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance.

Obi stressed that the current challenges facing the country — including economic hardship, insecurity, and social divisions — require collective reflection and collaboration among leaders across regions.

According to him, Nigeria needs leadership driven by competence, character, capacity, and compassion rather than personal ambition.

He added that governance should prioritise value creation over resource sharing, urging a shift from a consumption-driven economy to one anchored on production and effective utilisation of human and natural resources.

Obi described the 2027 general election as a crucial opportunity to reset Nigeria’s trajectory and chart a new course for national development.
