President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday decorated Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The ceremony followed the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing family reasons. However, sources within the Presidency said he was asked to resign during a meeting with the President.

Disu’s appointment came just 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, when he turns 60. Under the amended Police Act, which grants IGPs a four-year tenure regardless of age, he could remain in office until 2030 if confirmed.

He will serve in acting capacity pending confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council and the Senate.

Disu’s elevation is expected to trigger the retirement of several senior officers, including some Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, in line with police tradition.

Born on April 13, 1966, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 and has served in various operational and leadership roles, including as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the FCT. He also headed the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos and later led the Intelligence Response Team.
