ADC to Tinubu: Focus on insecurity, not opposition politics

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to concentrate on tackling Nigeria’s worsening security challenges rather than engaging in political battles ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party criticised the president’s recent declaration that he was ready to “fight to the finish” politically, saying such determination should be directed at terrorists, bandits and kidnappers threatening lives across the country.

Tinubu made the remark during a meeting with leaders of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the State House in Abuja.
The ADC said Nigerians elected Tinubu to secure the country and protect citizens, not to confront opposition parties.

According to the party, the president’s comment came shortly after reports that at least 30 people were killed in an attack on Naridon village in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, an incident it said underscores the country’s deepening security crisis.

The party accused the administration of relying on public statements instead of taking decisive action against violent criminal groups.
“Nigerians did not elect a Commander-in-Chief to become the nation’s chief issuer of condolence statements,” the statement said.

The ADC further argued that the president appears more forceful in responding to opposition politics than in confronting insecurity.

“President Tinubu should reserve words such as ‘fight to the finish’ for the battle against terrorists, bandits and kidnappers, not against political opponents,” the party stated.

The opposition party also maintained that after more than three years in office, the administration has not delivered the level of security Nigerians expected.

“Elections are won through performance, not political bravado,” the ADC said, adding that terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity remain the real challenges confronting the country.

The party therefore called on the president to prioritise the restoration of security and the protection of lives and property across Nigeria rather than focusing on political contests ahead of the 2027 elections.
