The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force will demonstrate professionalism before, during and after the 2027 general elections.

Disu gave the assurance on Tuesday in Port Harcourt while responding to questions from journalists after the launch of The Origin of Women in Nigeria Police Force, a book authored by 96-year-old Dame Stella Okuyiga, a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police and one of the 20 pioneer female officers of the Force.

The police chief said the Force had begun preparations for the forthcoming elections, including a meeting with Commissioners of Police and other senior officers across the country to review experiences from previous elections and identify areas for improvement.

According to him, the lessons learned from recent elections would help strengthen the Force’s performance during the 2027 polls.

“We have had two or three elections recently, and you can see that the police came very well and we did so well. We now brought all these experiences together, where we did well and where we did not do well, so that we can perform better in this big election that everybody is looking up to,” Disu said.

He added, “I give you my word. Nigeria Police will do so well, and we will make Nigeria Police so proud, and we will make Nigerians proud.”

On the book launch, Disu commended Okuyiga for documenting her experiences and institutional knowledge for the benefit of future generations of police officers, particularly women in the Force.

He noted that Okuyiga joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1955 as one of its pioneering female officers, describing her contribution as an important part of the institution’s history.

The IGP said the Force would ensure that copies of the book were made available to police training institutions nationwide to enable officers to learn about the experiences and contributions of earlier generations.

He said the initiative reflected the Force’s commitment to preserving its history and recognising the contributions of its personnel.

Speaking at the event, Okuyiga expressed delight that her book would preserve her legacy and make her experiences accessible to readers across the world.

She described the launch as a significant milestone in her life, noting that the publication would ensure her story continued to inspire future generations long after her lifetime.
