Atiku Calls For Rescue Of Abducted NYSC Members
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Federal Government, Imo State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue travellers abducted in Imo State, including young Nigerians preparing to begin the National Youth Service Corps programme.
Atiku made the call in a statement shared on his X account on Monday while reacting to the reported abduction of 20 travellers in the state.
According to him, some of those abducted have regained their freedom, while others are still being held by their captors. He called for immediate action to ensure that all the remaining victims are rescued and reunited with their families.
The former vice-president also raised concerns over the continued captivity of more than 70 pupils and students reportedly abducted from Mussa and Lassa communities in Borno State.
He said the prolonged detention of the children should not be ignored, adding that their families needed regular information about efforts being made to secure their release.
Atiku also criticised the wider security situation in Nigeria, particularly the continued attacks and abductions along roads, in communities and around schools.
He questioned the Federal Government’s handling of security funding, recalling the earlier promise that money saved from the removal of fuel subsidy would be used to improve security across the country.
According to Atiku, the situation facing young Nigerians has become more worrying as they encounter security challenges at different stages of their lives.
He pointed to the dangers faced by pupils and students, the rising cost of university education and the risks now confronting young people travelling to NYSC orientation camps.
Atiku further questioned the government’s approach to pipeline security contracts, alleging that large contracts were being given to companies linked to political interests while Nigerians continued to face attacks from criminals.
He maintained that protecting citizens should remain a major responsibility of government and called for stronger action to prevent further abductions.
The former vice-president expressed hope that all those still being held by their abductors would be rescued safely.
He also restated his commitment to pursuing a Nigeria where citizens, particularly young people, can live safely, access opportunities and build their future without being held back by insecurity.
