El-Rufai Returns to Court After Mother’s Burial
Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, on Tuesday appeared at the state high court in Kaduna following the burial of his mother.
He is also expected to proceed to the federal high court for the continuation of hearing on his bail application.
El-Rufai had been temporarily released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on compassionate grounds to attend his mother’s burial.
The court had earlier adjourned the bail hearing to March 31 after he was arraigned on March 24 on charges related to fraud and money laundering.
His mother, Hajiya Umma, passed away in Egypt, where she had been receiving medical treatment, and was laid to rest on Sunday.
The funeral was attended by prominent figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Aliko Dangote, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Isa Pantami.
Prior to his arraignment, El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 19, following his earlier release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
On March 18, the ICPC disclosed that it obtained a valid court order to extend his detention amid growing calls for his release.
