Why Storytelling Remains at the Heart of My Photography – Habeeblahi Maiyaki reveals

Muhammad Habeeblahi Maiyaki, a Nigerian portrait and documentary photographer and Creative Director of MH Visual, has said that storytelling remains the foundation of his photography and the driving force behind his creative journey.

Maiyaki, a graduate of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, explained that his interest in photography was inspired by a desire to preserve the stories of people, places, experiences, and moments that deserve to be remembered.

According to him, photography is more than creating visually appealing images; it is about capturing meaning, emotion, and memory through the lens.

“Every person has a story, every place carries a history, and every moment can become a piece of memory,” he said. “My responsibility as a photographer is to observe, connect, and document those stories as honestly as I can.”

Over the years, he has documented a wide range of people, events, and experiences, describing each assignment as an opportunity to grow as a visual storyteller. He noted that portrait and documentary photography have taught him to appreciate the details and emotions that are often overlooked.

Maiyaki is currently working on a documentary project covering the activities and engagements of Senator Saliu Mustapha, the senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District. He said the project has further strengthened his understanding of documentary photography and the importance of preserving moments that contribute to society’s collective memory.

He also expressed appreciation for the positive feedback he has received on his work, noting that many viewers have commended the natural way his images capture moments and communicate stories beyond what is immediately visible.

“The feedback has been very encouraging,” he said. “It has challenged me to look deeper, become more intentional with my work, and continue pushing myself creatively.”

As he continues to develop his career, Maiyaki said he hopes his photographs will inspire reflection, evoke emotion, and help people connect with the stories behind the images.

“There is still so much to learn, so many people to meet, and countless stories waiting to be told,” he added. “I remain committed to this journey, one frame at a time.”

For the photographer, the philosophy behind his work remains clear and consistent: “The goal has always been simple — to tell the story.”
