Italy Crash Out Again as Bosnia Seal World Cup Spot on Penalties
Italy will miss a third consecutive FIFA World Cup after suffering a 4–1 penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Tuesday’s dramatic qualification play-off final.
The decisive moment came in Zenica, where Esmir Bajraktarevic calmly converted the winning penalty to send Bosnia into Group B, alongside Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar, while condemning the Azzurri to another painful absence from the global showpiece.
Italy, four-time world champions, had taken an early lead through Moise Kean in the 15th minute. However, their hopes were dented before halftime when Alessandro Bastoni was sent off for a foul on Amar Memic, leaving the team to battle with 10 men for much of the match.
Bosnia capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Haris Tabakovic netting a deserved equaliser in the 79th minute to force extra time.
The tension carried into the penalty shootout, where Italy faltered. Pio Esposito missed the opening kick, while Bryan Cristante struck the crossbar. Bajraktarevic then sealed victory, slotting his effort under goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The defeat marks a historic low for Italy, who become the first World Cup winners to miss three straight editions of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Bosnia and Herzegovina celebrate a return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014, delighting home fans with a memorable qualification triumph.
