The Federal Government has announced a 50% reduction in interstate transport fares for the festive season to ease travel expenses for Nigerians celebrating Christmas and New Year.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Transportation, Olujimi Oyetomi.

“As part of the 2024 Yuletide transportation initiative, passengers will pay only 50% of normal fares to their destinations, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive,” the statement read.

The fare reduction is part of the government’s broader efforts to provide relief measures for Nigerians during the holidays.

The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Adeleye Adeoye, oversaw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the initiative.

The agreement was signed with major transport stakeholders, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON), and God is Good Motors.

Under the plan, passengers traveling from Abuja and Lagos (Oshodi) to various destinations nationwide will enjoy a 50% reduction in fares.
