The media office of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has confirmed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader has responded to an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ohiare Michael, Director of Bello’s media office, noted that the former governor “honoured the invitation” extended by the anti-corruption agency.

According to Michael, Bello’s decision came “after thorough consultations with his family, legal team, and political associates.”

The EFCC had previously charged Bello with allegations of money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of N80.2 billion. After multiple failed attempts to apprehend him, the commission declared him wanted.

On August 20, the court of appeal in Abuja directed Bello to present himself for arraignment.

Dele Oyewale, EFCC spokesperson, described the court’s ruling as a “vindication” of the commission’s stance that Bello must face trial.

Bello’s media team emphasized that the former governor, who has “great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority,” had merely sought to protect his fundamental rights while ensuring due process.

“The case has been ongoing in a court of competent jurisdiction, with Alhaji Yahaya Bello being represented by his legal team at every hearing,” the statement continued.

The statement further highlighted that the former governor’s decision to engage with the EFCC is rooted in his belief in transparency, with nothing to hide or fear.

“Governor Bello fully supports the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in its pursuit of sustainable economic development and the fight against corruption,” the media office added.

Bello was noted as being the first governor of Kogi State to establish an anti-corruption mechanism aimed at safeguarding state resources for the benefit of its citizens.

The media office also mentioned that Bello arrived at the EFCC Headquarters accompanied by several high-profile individuals and expressed hope that the commission would handle the matter professionally while respecting his fundamental rights.

Further details of his engagement with EFCC officials will be disclosed in due course.
