Ned Nwoko, the Delta North senator, has revealed why he advocated for a bill permitting civilians in Nigeria to own and carry firearms in response to security challenges, notably the recent Plateau killings.

He emphasized the need for strict regulations and training to ensure responsible ownership and proposes licensed firearm dealerships to curb illegal arms trafficking.
Nwoko suggests stringent qualifications, including medical references, community validation, cultural trust, and criminal background checks.
The aim is to establish comprehensive vetting, and the proposed firearms include shotguns, pistols, and pump-action shotguns.
The initiative aligns with previous calls from political figures, such as the House Majority Leader and the then Governor of Benue State, for Nigerians’ right to bear arms.
