Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma, announced on Wednesday that the government opposes the planned nationwide protests set for August, deeming them ill-timed.

The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to cancel plans for a nationwide protest, assuring that measures are being implemented to improve the economic situation in the country.

Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting with President Bola Tinubu, Uzodimma reaffirmed the government’s position, encouraging Nigerians to maintain national stability and avoid actions that could exacerbate economic difficulties.

“I believe it’s too early in this government’s tenure for anyone to call for a protest. There have been no discussions where the protest organizers have outlined their reasons,” Uzodimma stated.

He referenced the #EndSARS movement of 2020, highlighting the delicate political climate and warning about the potential for criminal exploitation.

“There seems to be an undisclosed motive behind these protests. We do not support protests that lack clear objectives and discussions.

“If you are protesting, what do you want the government to address? Protests typically aim to resolve specific issues. What are these issues?

“In my opinion, there is no need to exacerbate the political climate and our environment, further worsening the economic hardship caused by the global recession. I advise against the protests.”
