In a historic moment, Victor Osimhen, the forward for Super Eagles and Napoli, has secured the title of the 2023 CAF African Player of the Year.
This accomplishment marks Osimhen as the first Nigerian to claim this prestigious award since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.
The 24-year-old triumphed over formidable contenders, Mohammed Salah from Liverpool and Egypt, as well as Achraf Hakimi from PSG and Morocco.
Osimhen’s outstanding performance during the 2022/2023 season played a pivotal role in Napoli clinching the Serie A title after a three-decade wait.
His remarkable achievements include scoring 26 league goals, 31 in all competitions, earning him the Golden Boot and the title of Serie A Player of the Season.
Notably, Osimhen broke records, surpassing Liberia’s President George Weah, and became the African with the highest number of goals in the Italian topflight.
