UNILORIN defeat Kwara Poly in Emir’s cup opener
Kehinde Ayinde, the former player of the Golden Eaglets, netted the first goal of the Emir of Ilorin Cup, marking a historic start to the tournament following a grand opening ceremony held on Saturday 14th of October 2023 at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Ilorin, Kwara state capital.


University of Ilorin Warriors won against Kwara State Polytechnic football club at the opening ceremony of the Emir of Ilorin Cup 2023 organized by the Ilorin Emirate Football Council.
Kehinde Ayinde, the former player of the Golden Eaglets, netted the first goal of the Emir of Ilorin Cup, marking a historic start to the tournament following a grand opening ceremony held on Saturday 14th of October 2023 at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Ilorin, Kwara state capital.
The football tournament is part of the activities lined up to commemorate the 28th Coronation Anniversary of His Royal Highness the Emir of Ilorin, Alh. (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, CFR.
Speaking with newsmen at the end of the ceremony, Kwara State Governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq commended the organizers of the football tournament for uniting and promoting peace among Ilorin Emirate Youths, adding, “It is always a good thing to come together especially to celebrate an anniversary.
He said, “Sport unifies us, it brings our youths together and we will continue to support it.”
The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors forum who noted that his administration is committed to strengthening sporting activities, prayed to Allah to grant the Emir a healthy long life and prosperous reign on the throne.
Earlier, the Chairman organizing committee, Alhaji AbdulRasak Owolabi Wopa in his opening remarks disclosed that the competition is initiated to celebrate the Emir extraordinarily, adding that the Emir, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Sulu Gambari has endorsed the initiative to be an annual event in a carnival-like.
“Maimartaba is more than what we are doing for him today, he is a unique person. I am happy that I am the chairman of the committee that is celebrating him today,” Wopa said.
While praying that no casualties should be recorded throughout the competition, Wopa disclosed that the final of the tournament will come up on November 11 at Kwara State Stadium Complex.
Notable dignitaries at the event included the Executive Governor of Kwara state, His Excellency, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq; representative of the Emir, Prince Moddibo Sulu-Gambari; Traditional rulers led by Balogun Alanamu of Ilorin, Dr. Abubakar Jos; Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, Alhaji Durosiloun Atiku; Alanguas and Magajis.
Others are the chairman of Kwara State Sports Commission, Coach Bolakale Mogaji; and the Leader of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Barr. Oba Magaji Abdulkadir; Chairman House Committee on Sports and Youth Development, Hon. Rukayat Shittu, member representing Owode/Onire state constituency of Asa Local Government Area; Deputy House leader, Hon. Abdulraheem Medinat, member representing Lanwa/Ejidongari state constituency; Deputy whip, Hon. Mayram Yusuf Aladi, member representing Ilorin South state constituency; Member representing Ilorin East state constituency, Hon. Arinola Fatimah Lawal; member representing Alanmu/Ajikobi state constituency, Hon. Aishat Babatunde Tundun Alanamu; representative of Nigerian Army, Deputy Rector of Kwara Poly, Registra of Unilorin and sports lovers graced the colorful occasion.
